Adelaide City Council (ACC) is setting a benchmark among Australian cities in providing its residents with generous incentives for products such as Solar Energy Systems, Energy Storage systems, LED down lights and Eclectic Vehicle Charging controllers.
The scheme, which will commence on July 1st 2015, will expand on incentives already offered for solar hot water systems and rainwater tanks. ACC aims to encourage the community to invest in renewable energy, by offering up to $5000 for Solar PV systems and energy storage to residents, businesses, schools and community groups.
“We are on the cusp of an energy revolution, now, just as we capture and store the rain water that falls on our roofs, we can capture the sun’s energy and store it until we need it, making continuous availability of carbon-free renewable energy a reality”
Martin Haese – Lord Mayor, Adelaide City Council
The Sustainable City Program will provide eligible residents with:
Up to $5,000 for installing solar PV systems
Up to $5,000 for installing energy storage
Up to $500 per electric vehicle charging controller
Up to $5,000 for apartment building energy efficiency upgrades
Up to $1,000 for replacing Halogen down lights to LED alternatives
Up to $1,000 for solar hot water systemsUp to $500 for rain water tanks
Due to the high concentration of business premises in the ACC area it has until now had a lower percentage of rooftop solar than other councils in the metropolitan Adelaide area. The council hopes that by offering these incentives to businesses and other community organisations this will help with the increase in renewable investment in the city area.
Commercial solar makes a great deal of sense, generally business are operational during the time of day when solar systems are generating the most output, meaning they stand to gain considerable benefits from the installation of a PV system.
“In many cases it’s now possible to achieve a cash flow positive effect for your business from day one. There’s no up-front capital cost, plus the savings you make by reducing your energy bill will cover not only the cost of the solar system, but will also give you a net reduction in your power bill right from the start”
