Solar energy surpasses 100 gigawatts for the first time – The Sydney Morning Herald


According to the Australian Solar Council, Australia added about 1GW of solar PV capacity in 2012 bringing the country’s capacity to 2.4GW. Germany continues to lead the market, adding 7.6GW. This increase has seen the world’s total renewable energy capacity surpass 100 gigawatts.

The rapid growth of solar PV installations since 2008 has driven wholesale pricing down. “The fundamental economics are now driving the uptake of solar, rather than government support.” said John Grimes, chief executive of ASC.

It is expected that 2013 will continue to see strong demand for new PV panels in Australia with a further 1GW of capacity expected to be added.
